Olympus Camedia E-10 Colin Leftley

Pics are stored on cards hidden behind a lift up flap of the right hand side of the camera.
The digital novice has first to slide in a memory card, behind the lift-up flap on the right of the camera. The number of images you can store depends on the size or quality of the images you need and the size, and type of card used. The 16MB SmartMedia card supplied can store up to 46 shots at the lowest quality SQ setting (1280x960 pixels, 1:8 compression) or one TIFF image (2240x1680 pixels, 1:1 compression). The E-10 can take one SmartMedia (SM) card and one CompactFlash (CM) card, it's easy to swap between the two when both are installed, and cards of up 64Mb are available to maximise storage space.

Most of the time I used the E-10 at the default HQ (2240x1680 pixel, 1:8 compression) setting allowing for 16 shots to be stored before downloading and this proved a good compromise between quality and quantity. In fact I printed out some remarkable quality 8x6.5 inch images at this setting and it makes a good starting point. With certain subjects artefacts or compression distortion can occur at the HQ setting and here it may be necessary to switch to SHQ. Thanks to the image management software employed by the camera the quality on offer compares very favourably to an uncompressed TIFF image.
