The Big Wheel - Exchange Square, Manchester
A new visitor attraction dominated Manchester's skyline throughout the festive period - a 60 metre high big wheel. It took a team of 15 workers a week to assemble the 42-carriage wheel in Exchange Square next to the Triangle and the Printworks. After some licensing red tape, its maiden Manchester voyage took place on Thursday, October 28 and it will be open until February 2005. A spin on the 365-tonne wheel, which looks similar to the popular London Eye, lasts approximately ten minutes and offers stunning views for miles across the city centre. Previously the wheel was in Paris for two years, where its 51,000 lightbulbs illuminated the Champs-Elysees, and was then in Birmingham last year. While in France, a 'VIP gondola' was created for President Jacques Chirac.
