Andy Bright

Stonechat
Taken at about 35-40yrds on Westleton Heath in Suffolk (early October), typical Stonechat pic?
Nikon 990 and Swarovski AT80HD

Why We Chose It:
It is difficult, if not impossible to fault this picture of the Stonechat - it is very sharp, well exposed and well composed. Technically there is good use of depth of field, with the eye, beak and tail all kept sharp but the background has been thrown well out of focus to really help make the subject pop! Composition is also very pleasing, with the bird position beautifully within the frame and the leaves and branch leading the eye towards the bird.

John Cockburn

Hell for Leather
Paul young giving it his all.
Fuji S1 & 300mm f2.8

Why We Chose It:
This is a well executed motor-sports shot with critical timing. The exposure is good and although it is difficult to tell with a reasonably small on-screen image, the sharpness is at the very least acceptable. It is the timing and composition which drew us to this shot - the strong diagonal line of the motorbike and rider really emphasises the dynamic moment.

Steve Lewis

Ardmair and Isle Martin, Scottish Highlands.
Mamiya RB67, 50mm, Provia, 81A, 0.6 ND Grad.

Why We Chose It:
It was difficult to choose among Steve's photos in his Gallery. We felt that Steve had probably worked a little harder to get this shot. He has controlled the exposure through the use of a split neutral density filter - to keep the exposure balanced by limiting contrast, retaining detail in the sky and giving it that slightly brooding feel. There is good control of depth of field - from the rocks in the foreground to the mountains in the background and he has been careful with the composition in terms of the placement of the rocks in relation to the horizon.
